How to Get to The Potala Palace from Lhasa City

The Potala Palace (布达拉宫) is the spiritual and cultural symbol of Tibet. Located in the heart of Lhasa (拉萨), it is accessible by various means of transportation depending on your accommodation location and travel style.

🚶 Walking (One of the Best Options)

If you are staying in the city center (e.g., Beijing Road 北京路 or Barkhor Street 八廓街), walking is often the most recommended choice. Lhasa is not a large city, and the Potala Palace (布达拉宫) is centrally located.

  • Example: From Barkhor Street (八廓街, Jokhang Temple 大昭寺), it takes about 20–30 minutes on foot.

  • Walking allows you to soak in the local atmosphere and gradually adapt to the high altitude.

⚠️ Tip: Move slowly when walking at high altitude. Avoid overexertion to prevent altitude sickness.

🚌 Public Bus (Most Budget-Friendly)

Lhasa (拉萨) has a convenient public bus system covering most parts of the city.

  • Fare: 1 RMB per ride (cash or mobile payment).

  • Main Stop: “Potala Palace Station (布达拉宫站)”.

  • Bus Routes: No. 1, 13, 17, 24, and several others stop near the palace.

👉 After getting off, it’s usually just a short walk to the palace entrance.

🚖 Taxi / Ride-Hailing (Fastest & Easiest)

For those with luggage, limited time, or accommodation outside the city center:

  • Taxi: Lhasa taxis often operate on a shared-ride basis. Within the city, fares are usually around 10 RMB per ride. Always confirm with the driver.

  • Ride-hailing Apps (e.g., Didi): Transparent pricing, no haggling, and direct drop-off at the entrance — a great option for first-time visitors.

🚲 Pedicab / Cycle Rickshaw (Local Flavor)

In Lhasa Old Town, you can find traditional pedicabs (人力三轮车).

  • Best for short-distance rides when you want to experience the local lifestyle at a leisurely pace.

  • Always negotiate the fare before boarding to avoid misunderstandings.

  • The Potala Palace (布达拉宫) does not sell same-day tickets.

👕 Dress Code & Rules

  • Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes.

  • Long sleeves and pants recommended for sun protection.

  • Inside the palace: no photography or video recording.

  • Remove hats and sunglasses, keep quiet, and show respect in sacred areas.

🏃 Coping with Altitude

Lhasa (拉萨) is located at 3,650 m (11,975 ft), which makes altitude sickness a real concern. Visiting the Potala Palace (布达拉宫) also involves climbing many stairs, which increases physical strain.

Tips to Avoid Altitude Issues:

  • Spend 1–2 days acclimatizing in Lhasa before visiting.

  • Move slowly, rest frequently, and stay hydrated.

  • Carry a portable oxygen canister (available near the palace for ~20 RMB).

  • Keep high-energy snacks with you.

  • Avoid strenuous activity before and after your visit.
