Historical Context of Sanyan
The region historically known as “Sanyan” (三岩) has been a unique cultural and social unit. During the Qing Dynasty, this area was referred to by various names, including “Sa’an” and “San’an” in historical Chinese texts. The area is geographically and culturally divided into two major parts:
-
Gonjo Area: Including towns such as Molo (莫洛镇), Xiangpi (相皮乡), Haga (哈加乡), Awang (阿旺乡), and Zeba (则巴乡).
-
Sanyan Area: Including Mindo (敏都乡), Muxie (木协乡), Xiong Song (雄松乡), Shadong (沙东乡), Luomai (罗麦乡), and Krichi (克日乡).
These areas have remained distinct in terms of culture, traditions, and architecture, even after the administrative integration under Gonjo County in the 1950s.
“Paco” Social Structure
The “Paco” (帕措) society, derived from Tibetan, is a paternalistic social structure. “Paco” refers to a clan or group bound by paternal lineage, and it has played a fundamental role in preserving and continuing the social order in the Sanyan area for over 600 years.
The Paco social structure is deeply rooted in the unique history and geography of the region, ensuring the continuation of cultural practices and community bonds over centuries.
