Coqen County Festivals and Activities
The best known festival in Ngari Coqen County is Horse Racing Festival. Thousands of farmers and herdsmen dressed in colorful costumes, bring highland barley wine, yogurt and beautiful patterns kadians riding horse from all sides to court.
The Horse Racing festival is very famous in this area. According to legend, Horse Race festival has more than one thousand years of history. It is accompanied by farming and produce, so this festival is not regarded as a kind of physical activity, but as a prayer ceremony of farming activities. On the eve of the spring sowing, the villages and towns should hold a horse race called "Jiayang", which is to boost morale and smooth sowing; after spring sowing, they also hold it again called "Wuyang". In the autumn harvest, they hold a larger horse racing activities, known as the "Shiyang". The local people dressed in red to celebrate the harvest.
