Travel to Tibet from Kunming

This article is about the transportation between Tibet and Kunming. Tibet is a region covering much of the Tibetan Plateau in Tibet Autonomous Region, China. It is the traditional homeland of the Tibetan people as well as some other ethnic groups such as Monpa, Tamang, Qiang, Sherpa, and Lhoba peoples and is now also inhabited by considerable numbers of Han Chinese and Hui people. Tibet is the highest region on Earth, with an average elevation of 5,000 m (16,000 ft). The highest elevation in Tibet is Mount Everest, Earth’s highest mountain, rising 8,848 m (29,029 ft) above sea level.

How to Get to Tibet from Kunming?

By Flight

Currently, there are 4 direct flights from Kunming to Lhasa, which take about 2 hours 50 minutes, and 3 stopover flights, which stop at Lijiang or Diqing Shangri-La. The price of ticket is about CNY 2260.

By Train

Kunming – Lhasa

At now, there is no direct train from Kunming to Tibet. But the Yunnan-Tibet Railway is under construction. Because of the complex geological conditions and the difficulty of construction, the route is now under construction and it will take some time to open to traffic.

Kunming – Zhengzhou – Lhasa

There is no direct train from Kunming to Tibet. In order to get to Lhasa from Kunming by regular train, tourists need to transfer at Zhengzhou Railway Station (郑州火车站), and stay there for 4 hours and 22 minutes to transfer. The whole journey from Kunming to Lhasa is about 70 hours and 44 minutes.

Tourists can get to Zhengzhou by high-speed train. It saves more than 14 hours. The whole journey from Kunming to Lhasa by taking high-speed train to Zhenzhou to transfer is about 56 hours and 2 minutes.

Kunming – Chongqing – Lhasa

Tourists can also take high speed train from Kunming South Railway Station (昆明南站) to transfer at Chongqing West Railway Station(重庆西站), and stay there for 1 hour and 42 minutes to transfer, the whole journey from Kunming to Lhasa is about 42 hours.

Kunming – Chengdu – Lhasa

Tourists can also take high speed train from Kunming South Railway Station (昆明南站) to transfer at Chengdu, or take the flight to Chengdu, then transfer to Lhasa.
