How to Plan Tibet Namtso Lake Tour from Lhasa
Lake Namtso (纳木错, Nàmù Cuò) lies about 220 kilometers (140 miles) north of Lhasa (拉萨, Lāsa), and a single journey takes around 4–5 hours by car. For most travelers, a day trip is the most practical option, though facilities around the lake are basic and accommodation is limited.
If you prefer a slower pace and want to avoid spending too much time on the road in one day, consider a two-day itinerary with an overnight stay in Damxung (当雄, Dāngxióng), located about 2 hours away on the Lhasa road.
Suggested Day Itinerary
-
08:00: Depart from Lhasa (拉萨, Lāsa)
-
12:30–13:00: Arrive at the south shore of Lake Namtso (纳木错, Nàmù Cuò)
-
13:00–16:00: Explore the lakeside, enjoy the views, hike, and take photos
-
16:00–17:00: Have dinner at nearby restaurants
-
17:00: Drive back to Lhasa (拉萨, Lāsa)
-
20:30–21:00: Return to your hotel in Lhasa (拉萨, Lāsa)
Which Lake Shore to Choose?
There are four main sections of Lake Namtso’s shoreline, but the south shore and north shore are the primary areas most travelers visit. Each offers a distinct experience, so if you’re limited on time, you will need to choose between the two.
South Shore (Most Recommended)
-
Tashi Peninsula (塔什 peninsula, Tǎshí Yánzhuī) is the most developed and accessible area with ticketed access, parking lots, and relatively complete facilities. The south shore provides the best views of Lake Namtso, where the lake shines in vivid shades of blue, framed by the snow-capped Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains (念青唐古拉山脉, Niànqīng Tánggǔlā Shānmài) and dotted with yak herds and colorful prayer flags.
-
It’s also the best place for sunrise and sunset. You can take a 3-kilometer walk around Tashi Peninsula (塔什半岛, Tǎshí Bàndǎo) to immerse yourself in the breathtaking scenery.
North Shore (Shengxiang Tianmen / Holy Elephant Gate)
-
The north shore (北岸, Běi’àn) is famous for the Shengxiang Tianmen (圣象天门, Shèngxiàng Tiānmén), a natural rock arch resembling an elephant drinking from the lake. Though the classic viewpoint is no longer accessible, two newly built platforms offer panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains.
-
Challenges: Reaching the north shore requires 7–8 hours’ drive from Lhasa (拉萨, Lāsa), with stretches of rough, bumpy dirt road. A shuttle bus is also required to reach the viewing platforms, which are far from the water.
-
Recommendation: The south shore (南岸, Nán’àn) is more practical for most travelers due to its convenience and accessibility. The north shore (北岸, Běi’àn) is only recommended if you’re a photography enthusiast with extra time for the long and challenging journey.
Travel Tips
Altitude Notice:
Lake Namtso (纳木错, Nàmù Cuò) sits at 4,718 meters (15,479 feet), higher than Lhasa (拉萨, Lāsa). Visitors may experience altitude sickness, particularly in the morning when oxygen levels are lower. It’s essential to walk slowly and avoid strenuous activities.
-
Tip: Yaso Trip provides oxygen bottles in the car to help manage altitude effects.
Best Time to Visit:
-
The best time to visit Lake Namtso (纳木错, Nàmù Cuò) is from June to September when the lake is full, the grasslands are lush, and the herds of yaks and sheep graze beneath the snow-capped peaks.
-
Avoid winter (December–February) as the lake freezes over, and the Laken La Pass (拉根拉山口, Lāgēn Lā Shānkǒu) (5,190 m) often gets blocked by heavy snow, making access impossible.
Transportation:
The only way to reach Lake Namtso (纳木错, Nàmù Cuò) from Lhasa (拉萨, Lāsa) is by private car. The road is generally in good condition, but if you plan to visit the north shore (圣象天门, Shèngxiàng Tiānmén), expect two hours of very bumpy dirt roads.
For the south shore (南岸, Nán’àn), once you arrive at the scenic entrance, you’ll need to take a shuttle bus (30 minutes, 100 RMB / 14 USD) to reach the lakeside.
Facilities:
Facilities around the lake are basic. Toilets are limited and often poorly maintained, so it’s best to use restrooms in hotels or restaurants before setting out.
-
There are no hotels at Namtso (纳木错, Nàmù Cuò), but there is a campsite with limited electricity and running water. Better hotel options can be found in Damxung (当雄, Dāngxióng).
Food options are scarce, so bring snacks or light meals for the journey.
Swimming Not Allowed:
Namtso (纳木错, Nàmù Cuò) is considered one of Tibet’s most sacred lakes. Swimming, washing, or entering the water is strictly prohibited and seen as deeply disrespectful.
Lake Namtso vs. Lake Yamdrok
Both Lake Namtso (纳木错, Nàmù Cuò) and Lake Yamdrok (羊卓雍湖, Yángzhuō Yōnghú) are iconic Tibetan lakes but offer very different experiences.
Namtso (纳木错, Nàmù Cuò)
-
Vast and ocean-like, Namtso (纳木错, Nàmù Cuò) features deep blue waters with waves rolling across the lake.
-
It is surrounded by distant snow-capped peaks, creating a dramatic and awe-inspiring view.
-
Namtso (纳木错, Nàmù Cuò) is best for visitors who appreciate its grandiose and overwhelming natural beauty.
Yamdrok (羊卓雍湖, Yángzhuō Yōnghú)
-
Yamdrok (羊卓雍湖, Yángzhuō Yōnghú) has calm, reflective waters framed by grasslands, creating a tranquil and graceful environment, often referred to as picture-perfect.
-
Closer to Lhasa (拉萨, Lāsa) (2–3 hours) and more easily accessible, Yamdrok (羊卓雍湖, Yángzhuō Yōnghú) offers several viewpoints and the opportunity to interact with local wildlife, like riding a yak or holding a lamb.
Recommendation:
-
If your Tibet trip is shorter than a week, choose Lake Yamdrok (羊卓雍湖, Yángzhuō Yōnghú). It’s easier to reach, offers diverse experiences, and is close to other destinations like Shigatse (日喀则, Rìkāzé) and Mount Everest (珠穆朗玛峰, Zhūmùlǎngmǎ Fēng).
-
If you’re passionate about Tibetan lakes, you can visit both lakes, but it will require an additional 2–3 days of travel.
