Mingzhu- Inheritor of Shannan Tibetan Medicine Bath Method in Tibet
Mingzhu (明珠) is a national representative inheritor of the Shannan Tibetan Medicine Bath Method (山南藏医药浴法), a traditional Tibetan healing practice. Born in 1965 in Qonggyai County (琼结县), Shannan City (山南市), Tibet, Mingzhu has dedicated her life to the promotion and practice of Tibetan medicine. In 2018, she was selected as one of the inheritors for the fifth batch of national intangible cultural heritage projects. She has worked for many years at the Shannan Tibetan Hospital (山南市藏医院), focusing primarily on external Tibetan medicine treatments.
In addition to her clinical work, Mingzhu has contributed significantly to the transmission of the Tibetan medicine bath method, teaching it through clinical practice, mentorship, and specialized training programs, such as the 2021 Beijing Tibetan Hospital training course (北京藏医院培训班). The Tibetan medicine bath method she practices was successfully added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Representative List in 2018, highlighting its unique benefits for treating high-altitude diseases such as rheumatism and arthritis.
Inheriting the Tradition
Mingzhu began her journey in Tibetan medicine at the age of four, learning the basics of Tibetan medicine from her father, Qonggyai Baira Wangjiu Dorji (琼结白日瓦旺久多吉). After graduating from the Shannan Health Vocational School (山南卫校) in 1992, she joined the Shannan Tibetan Hospital where she systematically mastered the theory and clinical techniques of Tibetan external treatments, specializing in Tibetan medicine baths.
With over 30 years of experience, she has developed her own unique diagnostic and treatment methods that continue to be passed on through her extensive clinical work.
Promoting the Tibetan Medicine Bath Method
Mingzhu has played a pivotal role in the modern transmission and development of the Tibetan medicine bath method. Key contributions include:
-
Tibetan Medicine Bath Specialty Development: Mingzhu led the development of the Tibetan Medicine Bath specialty at medical institutions in Shannan (山南), facilitating its integration into the residents’ health insurance system in 2009.
-
Teaching and Training: In 2021, she was appointed as a lecturer at the Beijing Tibetan Hospital (北京藏医院) to teach a specialized course on Tibetan medicine baths, where she systematically presented the theoretical and cultural aspects of the practice.
-
Traditional Mentorship and Education: Mingzhu has trained many apprentices through the “Traditional Mentorship + Academic Education” model, with over 60% of her students being women.
International Influence
Mingzhu has been instrumental in the successful nomination of the Tibetan Medicine Bath Method to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
In November 2018, the method was officially inscribed into the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Throughout the nomination process, Mingzhu helped showcase the Tibetan medicine bath’s therapeutic process on international platforms, including live demonstrations at Tibetan medicine bath centers, where she personally guided patients through treatments.
Her students are now fully capable of performing the entire treatment process, from the preparation of medicinal ingredients to controlling water temperatures.
Academic Contributions
In addition to her practical work, Mingzhu has made significant academic contributions to the development of Tibetan Medicine Bath practices:
-
Modern Clinical Application: Based on the traditional Tibetan medical text, the Four Medical Tantras (《四部医典》), Mingzhu has developed modern clinical standards for the application of the foundational formula known as “Five Flavored Amrita” (五味甘露).
-
Customized Treatments: Mingzhu has introduced modifications to the basic formulation by adding specific medicinal ingredients to address different health conditions.
-
Evaluation Systems: She has established a Tibetan Medicine Bath efficacy evaluation system, providing a framework for standardized treatment and scientific assessment of the method’s healing properties.
