Shigatse Railway Station

Brief Introduction

Shigatse Railway Station is located in Zhandui Village of Jiacuoxiong Township, about 5 kilometers away from the downtown of Shigatse and 248 kilometers away from Lhasa Railway Station. The station officially opened for operations on 16 August 2014 which is the final station of Lhasa-Shigatse Railway. The Shigatse railway station is large compared to current needs as it has six tracks serving two island platforms and a single side platform. The station hall is divided into two floors and the waiting room can accommodate about 300 passengers. In the square, you can see a huge rotational prayer wheel, making Shigatse railway station a scenic spot. Now it is a second-rate station administrated by Qinghai-Tibet Railway Company.

Lhasa to Shigatse Railway

The Lhasa–Shigatse railway, or La’ri railway is a high-elevation railway that connects Lhasa to Shigatse, which is an extension of Qinghai-Tibet Railway in Tibet. The length of the railway is 253 km and the travel time between Lhasa and Shigatse on this line is roughly three hours. The line was constructed in September 2010 and completed in July 2014. The first train, K9821, started at Lhasa railway station running to Shigatse at 9:00 a.m. on August 16(Beijing time). Soon after opening, the line became the primary mode of transport between Lhasa and Shigatse. Transportation

As the second largest city in Tibet under the jurisdiction of Tibetan Autonomous Region, Shigatse is located in the southwest part of People’s Republic of China and southwest part of Tibet. It borders on the Ali area in the west, is next to Nagqu district in the north, Lhasa and Shannan Prefecture in the east and is contiguous to Nepal, Bhutan and India. It was once a political and religious center and served as a residential place of Panchen Lama. Shigatse Railway Station – Shigatse City Centre

Take the bus No.4, No.7 and No.8 to downtown Shigatse at the cost of only 2 CNY per person. For foreign travelers, you need a travel guide to accompany you to take the bus.

Shigatse Railway Station – Tashilhunpo Monastery

Shigatse Railway Station is about 9 kilometers away from the prominent Tashilhunpo Monastery. And it takes about 20 minutes to get there by car. City buses are also available for the transfer but not recommended due to a long walk needed.

Shigatse Railway Station – Palcho Monastery

There are shuttle buses departing every hour from 8:30 to 19:00 to Gyantse every day. Travelers can take a taxi to the Bus Station and then take the bus running from Shigatse to Gyantse. On your arrival at Gyantse bus station, just walk a few minutes to Palcho Monastery.

Shigatse Railway Station – Everest Base Camp

The highest peak- Mount Everest is situated in Shigatse. The famed Everest Base Camp is located about 350 kilometers to the southwest of Shigatse city. There is no shuttle bus running to the region of Mount Everest. So most travelers will choose to rent a car to. In fact, renting a car in Lhasa is more convenient and possible than in Shigatse.
