Tsola Mountain Pass in Shigatse
Gyatso La Pass (嘉措拉山口), also known as Dingri Border (定日界), is a high mountain pass within the Qomolangma National Nature Reserve (珠峰国家级自然保护区). A giant reserve signboard stands by the roadside, surrounded by countless prayer flags fluttering in the wind. The pass sits at an altitude of 5,248 meters, with a cement marker draped in colorful prayer flags.
Above 4,000 meters, vegetation is sparse—the sky appears delicate and soft, while the mountains are rugged and harsh. The upper half of the view is a pure azure blue, while the lower half is filled with earthy reds and dusty yellows. Aside from the grey mountain road, signs of life are rare. Prayer flags, in blue, white, red, green, and yellow, are strung up by locals, their vibrant colors balancing the monotone of the vast landscape.

Introduction
Gyatso La Pass is often associated with Mount Qomolangma (珠穆朗玛峰, also known as Mount Everest), the highest point on Earth. For climbers attempting to summit from the north side, Gyatso La is the unavoidable gateway, making it known as “the portal to Everest.”
If Everest is compared to a grand symphony, then Gyatso La is the short prelude—brief and unassuming, yet indispensable in completing the composition. Located along China National Highway 318 (国道318), Gyatso La is also the essential passage to Qomolangma National Park (珠穆朗玛国家公园).
