Mima- Inheritor of Tibetan Medicine (External Treatment) in Lhasa, Tibet

Mima (米玛) is a renowned expert in Tibetan Medicine, specifically the External Treatment (藏医外治法) method, and a National-level Intangible Cultural Heritage (非物质文化遗产) representative inheritor of this ancient practice. Currently serving as the President and Professor at Tibet University of Traditional Tibetan Medicine (西藏藏医药大学), Mima has been dedicated to the education, inheritance, and development of Tibetan Medicine for many years. He has received numerous prestigious awards, including the National May 1st Labor Medal (全国五一劳动奖章), and was selected for the New Century National Talents Project (新世纪百千万人才工程).

In 2022, Mima’s leadership saw the establishment of the Virtual Teaching and Research Room for Core Tibetan Medicine Courses (藏医核心课程群虚拟教研室), a national pilot project, and he was also nominated as a National Model for Teaching and Education in the same year. Contributions to Education and Research

In 2022, Mima led the establishment of the Virtual Teaching and Research Room for Core Tibetan Medicine Courses, which was selected as a pilot project for the second batch of virtual teaching research rooms in China. This initiative aims to innovate the educational model for Tibetan Medicine and promote its modernization. By 2024, Mima highlighted that over 8,000 professionals have been trained by Tibet University of Traditional Tibetan Medicine, with more than 2,600 students currently enrolled. In addition, the university has fostered innovation in collaboration with other Tibetan Medicine institutions and universities.

In September 2024, the university launched the Institute for the Study of the Four Medical Classics (四部医典研究院), aiming to combine theoretical research and clinical practices in Tibetan Medicine. Mima advocates for building a Chinese-style modernization system for Tibetan Medicine and strengthening interdisciplinary research.

Active Participation in Key Events

Mima actively participates in events promoting Tibetan Medicine and culture. In May 2025, he will attend the 106th anniversary of the May Fourth Movement (五四运动), where he plans to emphasize the importance of youth maintaining a strong belief in and appreciation for Tibetan Medicine culture.

In August 2024, during a signing ceremony at Naqu Tibetan Hospital (那曲市藏医院), Mima stressed the need for collaboration in medical, teaching, and research sectors to improve societal service capabilities. Additionally, in September 2024, he participated in the Cao Ru · Tsai Lang Academic Symposium (措如·才郎学术研讨会), where he reflected on his experience of learning from Tibetan Medicine masters and emphasized the importance of passing on the spirit of Tibetan Medicine.

University Management and Future Plans

In 2022, Mima provided an in-depth report on the university’s progress in areas such as Party-building, ideological education, and subject development during the year-end summary meeting. He also outlined development goals for the 2023 academic year.

In September 2023, Tibet University of Traditional Tibetan Medicine signed a comprehensive strategic cooperation agreement with Tibet Autonomous Region Tibetan Hospital (西藏自治区藏医院), reinforcing collaborative efforts in various fields. By February 2025, the university recognized and celebrated outstanding individuals from the previous year’s evaluations, with Mima presenting the annual work summary.
