Tibet Autonomous Region People’s Hospital (西藏自治区人民医院) is the largest and most comprehensive Grade A Triple-A public hospital in Tibet, providing medical care, education, research, emergency services, health care, and preventive services. Established on May 8, 1952, it has been an essential institution not only for the region’s basic medical services but also for guiding the treatment of complex diseases. It plays a central role in medical talent development, high-altitude illness research, and is home to several prominent medical bases.

Hospital History

Tibet Autonomous Region People’s Hospital (西藏自治区人民医院) was founded as a Lhasa People’s Hospital (拉萨市人民医院) on September 8, 1952, based on the Lhasa Outpatient Department of the Liberation Army (解放军拉萨门诊部). It has undergone numerous changes since then:

  • 1950s: The hospital was established with medical teams arriving from various parts of China to support Tibet’s healthcare.

  • 1957: The hospital moved to its current location, significantly improving medical conditions.

  • 1962: It was renamed Tibet Autonomous Region People’s Hospital (西藏自治区人民医院) after the new Lhasa People’s Hospital (拉萨市人民医院) was completed.

  • 1988: The hospital was renamed Tibet Autonomous Region First People’s Hospital (西藏自治区第一人民医院), but continued to use its original name in practice.

  • 2011: The hospital became a vice-ministry-level unit under the Tibet Autonomous Region Health and Family Planning Commission (西藏自治区卫生计生委), officially restoring the name Tibet Autonomous Region People’s Hospital (西藏自治区人民医院).

  • April 2024: In response to the growing needs of pediatric patients, the hospital expanded its Pediatric Hemophilia Department (血友病专科) to provide comprehensive care for children with hemophilia.


Future Plans

In July 2025, the hospital’s Surgical and Oncology Center (手术与肿瘤中心) passed its pre-acceptance inspection, marking a significant milestone in expanding its capabilities in specialized treatments and surgeries.
