Yanbi Township (岩比乡) is located in the eastern part of Jomda County (江达县), Chamdo Prefecture (昌都市), Tibet Autonomous Region, China. It borders Baiyu County (白玉县) to the south, with Jinsha Township (金沙乡) to the southeast and Hepo Township (河坡乡) to the south. To the northwest, it adjoins Dege County (德格县) and Baiya Township (白垭乡). The township is situated 51.8 kilometers from the county seat. Yanbi covers an area of 397.16 square kilometers and, as of the end of 2019, had a registered population of 4,556.
Historical Background
Yanbi Township was established in 1960 as part of Gangtuo District (岗托区). In 1970, the area was reorganized into a commune, but by 1984, Yanbi Township was re-established. In 1989, the district and township were merged, and three townships (Dongza, Yanbi, and Geda) were combined to form Yanbi Township under Gangtuo District. In 1999, Gangtuo District was dissolved, and Yanbi Township became directly administered by Jomda County.
As of June 2020, Yanbi Township comprises six administrative villages, with the township government located in Yanbi Village.

Yanbi Township is located in the eastern part of Jomda County, bordered by Baiyu County (白玉县) to the south, Dege County (德格县) to the northwest, and Jomda Town (江达镇) to the north. It spans an area of 397.16 square kilometers. The terrain in Yanbi is complex, with an average altitude of 3,700 meters, featuring a combination of mountains and valleys.
Climate
Yanbi Township experiences a plateau semi-arid warm climate. The region’s climate is characterized by significant temperature variations, with summer temperatures reaching up to 26°C and winter lows dipping to -20°C. The area receives between 350 to 450 mm of rainfall annually.
Hydrology
The major river running through Yanbi Township is the Jinsha River (金沙江), a key water source in the region.
Population and Ethnicity
As of the end of 2011, the township had a population of 3,809, predominantly of Tibetan ethnicity. By the end of 2017, the resident population had grown to 4,073. By 2019, the registered population reached 4,556.

Name Origin
The name “Yanbi” is derived from the Tibetan word for “lotus” (莲花), reflecting the region’s cultural and natural connection to Tibetan traditions.

In February 2022, Yanbi Township was included in the list of candidates for the 2021 Tibet Autonomous Region Ecological Civilization Construction Demonstration Township, in recognition of its contributions to sustainable development and environmental preservation.
