Dengke Township (邓柯乡) is located in the northern part of Jomda County (江达县), Chamdo Prefecture (昌都市), Tibet Autonomous Region, China. The township lies at the crossroads of Tibet, Sichuan, and Qinghai provinces. It is bordered to the east by Loxu Town (洛须镇) and Ezhi Township (俄支乡) of Dege County (德格县) in Sichuan, separated by the Jinsha River (金沙江). To the west, Dengke Township shares a boundary with Batong Township (巴通乡) of Yushu County (玉树县) in Qinghai, also across the Jinsha River. The township covers an area of 1,636.36 square kilometers.

Historically, prior to 1959, Dengke was part of the Xidengke Zong (西邓柯宗). In 1959, Xidengke Zong was merged into Jomda County. In 1998, a reorganization led to the creation of Dengke Township, which incorporated the former Qingke (青稞), Shaga (沙嘎), and Balong (巴龙) Townships. As of June 2020, Dengke Township governs six administrative villages, with the township government located in Qingke Village (青稞村).

Dengke Township is located in the northern part of Jomda County, at the junction of three provinces: Tibet, Sichuan, and Qinghai. The township covers 1,636.36 square kilometers and is strategically located along the Jinsha River, which serves as the natural boundary between regions.

The region’s terrain is complex, with varied landscapes including mountains, valleys, and river valleys. The average elevation in Dengke Township is approximately 3,700 meters above sea level.

Climate

Dengke Township enjoys a plateau temperate semi-humid monsoon climate. The region experiences mild temperatures and abundant rainfall, earning it the nickname “Tibet’s Jiangnan” (a term used to describe the southern regions of China known for their mild, lush climates). The maximum temperature can reach 36.6°C, while the minimum can drop to around -10°C. The annual average temperature is about 12°C, with an average annual precipitation of over 400 mm.

Natural Resources

Dengke Township is home to various mineral resources, including a significant lead-zinc deposit located in Serima Village (色日玛村).

Population and Demographics

By the end of 2019, the registered population of Dengke Township was 7,883. Most of the population is of Tibetan ethnicity. The population of the township had steadily grown, with 7,752 residents recorded by the end of 2017.

Overview

Dengke Township is a semi-agricultural and semi-pastoral region. The local economy primarily relies on agriculture and animal husbandry. In 2011, the township’s GDP was 24.98 million yuan, with a per capita income of 3,524 yuan.

Agriculture

The main agricultural products include barley (青稞), beans, corn, and buckwheat. The total grain production in 2011 reached 1,607 tons. The farmland spans over 22,306.95 acres, with 13,083.2 acres designated as basic farmland protection zones.

Animal Husbandry

Animal husbandry is another key economic activity in Dengke. Livestock farming, primarily of yaks, sheep, and cattle, remains central to local livelihoods. In 2011, the township had 15,298 livestock, with a turnover rate of 31%.

Industrial Development

In 2019, Dengke Township had four industrial enterprises and five comprehensive shops or supermarkets with an area of over 50 square meters.

Infrastructure and Social Services

Transportation

By the end of 2011, all six village committees in Dengke Township had access to roads, and 25 natural villages had basic road access. The township’s road network is vital for connecting the region with surrounding areas, and the road maintenance rate for rural roads was about 25%.

Education

Dengke Township operates a nine-year compulsory education system. By 2011, the township had one nine-year integrated school, one completed school, and one teaching point. The school enrolled 909 students, achieving an enrollment rate of 80.81%.

Healthcare

Dengke Township has a health clinic, with four medical staff members. By the end of 2011, 5,538 people participated in the New Rural Cooperative Medical Scheme, achieving a participation rate of 91%.

Social Welfare

In 2011, 2,889 residents participated in the New Rural Social Pension Insurance Scheme, with a participation rate of 85%. The township also implemented a housing project, completing 230 new homes for 2,430 local residents.

Cultural and Historical Significance

Traditional Clothing

The local Tibetan population values traditional clothing, with distinct styles based on geography and lifestyle. In rural areas, older residents often wear traditional Tibetan robes (藏袍), which are characterized by long sleeves, wide waists, and large collars. Men’s attire often includes hair ties and accessories such as ivory, coral, and turquoise. Women also adorn themselves with jewelry, including large earrings, and wear decorative belts with knives and other ornaments.

Qingke Monastery (青稞寺)

Qingke Monastery is the largest Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect monastery in Jomda County. The monastery is an important site for those studying Tibetan Buddhism, especially the Yellow Sect (黄教). It remains a key cultural and spiritual landmark for the Tibetan community in the region.
