About Zhari Namco Lake

Zhari Namco is a salt lake in Tibet, it is bounded on the west by the Ngari Prefecture of Coqên County, and on the east by the Ngamring County of Shigatse Prefecture(日喀则市). Zhari Namco is 996.9 square kilometers, with a drainage area of 15,433.2 square kilometers, an elevation of 4,613 meters, length 54.3 kilometers and mean width 18.36 kilometers It is located east of Coqên Town in southern Tibet.

History and Development of Zhari Namco Lake

Zhari Namco, the largest salt water lake in Ngari and the third largest lake in Tibet (the largest lake is Namtso Lake, the second largest one is Siling Tso) lies among the peaks of Gangdise Mountains. The lake is about 54 km long and 20 km wide, with an elevation of 4613 meters and a total area of 1023 square km.

There are various wildlife living near Zhari Namco, which is also known as a famous wet land as well as an excellent prairie. Tibetan antelopes and kiangs are all t oo often seen seeking food or running on the lakeside. On the island live and breed a variety of wild birds such as black-headed gulls, bar-headed geese and black-necked cranes.   
The Munuoshan Isolated Peak, which is made up of black limestones formed at the bottom of sea 200 or 300 million years ago, lies to the north of Zhari Namco. To the southeast of the lake, there is an arc sand berm extending to the isolate island in the middle of a lake. You can take a walk along the berm to the isolated island where lava blocks strew at random, or you can stand on the island to look around. The lake you see is the same as the sky in color.   

Zhari Namco, like a sapphire left behind by the fairy, is no doubt a very marvelous lake to visit.

Attraction Transportation

Naqu District 206 line runs through the Cuoqin County. There are Xinjiang Tibet highway in the south and the District Lane 301 line in the north. The highway traffic system is perfect, visitors can choose self driving tour in Coqen County. There are 724.2 km from Ngari to Coqen County and it will spend 17 hours for driving.  Tourist can travel to Ngari by air firstly and then transfer to Coqen County by long-distance bus, which is the major choice.
