Tibet – Nepal Railway
China will extend the Lhasa-Shigatse railway, a branch line of the Qinghai-Tibet railway, which opened in 2014, to the Gyirong port in Gyirong County on the China-Nepal border. Extending 540 kilometers from Shigatse, construction is scheduled to begin in 2020.
This project is in line with the “One Belt And One Road” strategy of China’s transportation development. It will greatly improve the tourism economy of the Buddhist country of Nepal, greatly increase the trade volume between China and Nepal, and provide Nepal with opportunities to benefit from the rapid development of China’s economy, and greatly increase the tourism aspirations of Chinese Buddhists.
If the construction of the China-Nepal Railway is completed, the vast majority of Buddhists in south China can go to Nepal by the Sichuan-Tibet Railway, the Yunnan-Tibet Railway and the Lhasa-Shigatse Railway.
