About Mangtso Lake
Mangtso Lake Natural Scenic Area（莽措湖自然风景区）is located in the middle of Mangling Township, Markam County（芒康县）, Chamdo Prefecture（昌都市）, Tibet Autonomous Region, 66 kilometers away from No. 214 national highway and 90kilometera from the county seat. It is 4,313 meters above sea level and covers the water area of more than 20 square kilometers. There are two characteristic islands, respectively known as Duique Island（堆确岛）and Duifang Island（堆房岛）in the lake. There are green grass and the snow peaks around the lake, which is picturesque beautiful. In the lake inhabit many grass carp leisurely and carefree. Black stork, white stork, teal, yellow, ducks and other birds will dance and frolic here from time to time. At the same time, in the alpine meadow, visitors can hear the bright folk song of the Tibetan herdsmen, which will make you drawing in the wonderful fairyland.
Mangtso Lake Natural Scenic Area belongs to a semi-humid temperate climate in the plateau area. In April, the temperature is lower, and the average temperature of summer and autumn is 8 to 15.4 degrees Celsius. It is cold in the morning and the evening but really hot in the daytime. It will snow in late October. Visitors should prepare the necessary clothing according to season and climate characteristics.
Attraction Transportation
The Sichuan-Tibet National Highway 318 and Yunnan-Tibet National Highway 214 converge in Mangkam County, and there are many stops on long-distance coach routes at both Mangkam and Yanjing. Transportation to the area is convenient but it’s a long journey, and a bumpy road. Hitchhiking is common in Tibet, but at a negotiated price. It is possible, but rare, to rent a car for around RMB 2.5 to 5 per km. There are about two flights to Bangda from Chengdu and Lhasa every week, depending on the (changeable) weather.
