Rongme Ngatra of the Chola Mountains in Garze, Sichuan

Rongme Ngatra Peak (绒麦昂扎峰), also known as Que Er Shan (雀儿山) in Mandarin, is the highest peak in the Chola Mountains (沙鲁里山脉) located in the Kham region of western Sichuan, China. With an impressive elevation of 6,168 meters (20,236 feet), it is the fourth-highest mountain in Sichuan and stands out as the tallest peak in the Chola range.

In Tibetan, the name Rongme Ngatra means “the mountain that no eagle can fly over,” referring to the mountain’s rugged and formidable terrain. Due to its steep slopes and year-round snow cover, it has earned the local saying: “Climb Rongme Ngatra, and the whip touches the sky,” a reflection of its towering height and the challenges of ascending it.

Climbing History

Rongme Ngatra was first summited in 1988 by a joint climbing team from China University of Geosciences (中国地质大学) and Kobe University (神户大学) in Japan. Since then, it has become a popular challenge for mountaineers seeking to conquer 6,000-meter (19,700-foot) snow peaks.

Surrounding Scenery

On the eastern foothills of the mountain lies Xinlu Lake (新路海) or Yulong La Tso (玉隆拉措), a glacial lake at an elevation of 4,148 meters (13,611 feet), often referred to as the “Jade Pool of the West.” This serene lake is surrounded by stunning landscapes and offers visitors an unforgettable sight.
