Pasang- Inheritor of Monba Tibet Opera in Cona County, Shannan, Tibet
Pasang (巴桑) is a prominent figure in the preservation of Tibetan culture, specifically known for his work in protecting and inheriting Monba Tibetan Opera (山南门巴戏) and the “Zetiel” Traditional Weaving Technique (泽帖尔纺织技艺). Born in 1950 in Naidong (乃东), Tibet, he is a representative inheritor of the second batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage (国家级非物质文化遗产) projects, recognized for his contributions to Tibetan opera and weaving.
Cultural Heritage Inheritance
Pasang’s journey into cultural preservation began early in his life. He worked in the Naidong Commune’s amateur art promotion team from 1963 to 1981, followed by his involvement with the Uruoqi Performing Troupe and Shannan Literary and Art Editing Department. Since 1987, he has been serving as the Deputy Director of the Ethnic Cultural Heritage Rescue Office within the Shannan Cultural and Tourism Bureau (山南文广局民族文化遗产抢救办公室).
Pasang’s dedication to Monba Tibetan Opera started in 1986, when he first encountered the traditional art. He later became the director and choreographer of the opera at the Zhebang Shoton Festival (哲蚌雪顿表演), where the performance won a collective second prize. Pasang’s deep commitment to the art earned him the title of representative inheritor of the Monba Tibetan Opera in 2010.
Preserving and Reviving the Zetiel Weaving Tradition
The “Zetiel” Weaving Technique is a traditional method of weaving fine wool in Tibet. This nearly lost technique was revived by Pasang in 2008, when he founded the Naidong Ethnic Hand-woven Handicraft Cooperative (乃东区民族哗叽手工编织专业合作社). The cooperative was established to preserve the endangered technique, and Pasang worked closely with elderly artisans to restore the production processes, such as material selection and spinning.
Thanks to his efforts, Zetiel Weaving was listed as an Autonomous Region-level Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2010, and it was elevated to National-level Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2021.
Development of the Cooperative and Social Contributions
In 2008, the Naidong Ethnic Hand-woven Handicraft Cooperative was established. The cooperative aimed not only to preserve the traditional weaving techniques but also to promote employment and economic development. By adopting an “employment-based training” model, the cooperative has trained 42 impoverished learners and employed 127 workers as of 2023, including 32 disabled employees. The cooperative’s annual profit reached 1.3 million yuan (approximately 200,000 USD) by 2023, and their products, branded under “Zetiel”, are now sold both domestically and internationally.
Pasang’s innovative approach blends traditional techniques with modern design elements, creating products that combine ethnic features with fashionable styles, appealing to a wider and younger audience.
Social Impact and Contributions
Pasang’s contributions to the community go beyond cultural preservation; they also include substantial social welfare initiatives. The cooperative has successfully provided employment for over 400 impoverished individuals, including relocated families and people with disabilities.
Additionally, Pasang’s work in cultural promotion includes his partnership with Mary Fashion (玛丽服饰), leading to the establishment of the Shannan Zetiel Ethnic Handicraft Development Co., Ltd. (山南泽帖民族手工业开发股份有限公司). This venture aims to commercialize the Zetiel weaving techniques and push for their industrial development, ensuring long-term sustainability and recognition of the heritage.
Major Honors and Achievements
In 2020, Pasang was honored with the title of “Tibet Craftsman” (西藏工匠), recognizing his outstanding contributions to Tibetan craftsmanship. His efforts were further acknowledged in 2025 when he was selected as a representative inheritor in the Sixth Batch of National-level Intangible Cultural Heritage representatives, and he was designated as an Ambassador for Chinese Textile Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Pasang’s work serves as a bridge between Tibet’s rich cultural traditions and the modern world, ensuring that ancient art forms like Monba Tibetan Opera and Zetiel weaving continue to thrive and reach new generations. His dedication to cultural preservation, education, and community development makes him a true champion of Tibetan heritage.
