Qamdo Bangda Airport

Qamdo Bangda Airport is a civilian airport located on Bangda Grassland, Baxoi County, Qamdo City, Tibet. It is 136 kilometers from Chengguan Town, the capital of Qamdo City, and is far from the town. The airport belongs to Grade 4D level civil airport. At 4334 meters above sea level, Bangda airport is the world’s second highest altitude, China’s second highest civilian airport. Because of the high altitude, the air is thin and the air resistance is reduced, the take-off and land performance of the aircraft is greatly affected. It is necessary to have a longer take-off and landing distance than at low altitude airports, in order to make the flights take off and land normally, Bangda Airport has the world’s longest civilian runway, 5500 meters long.

Qamdo Bangda Airport is known as the “farthest airport from the urban area in the world” and “civil airport with the worst climate in the world”. It is located in the narrow valley of Bangda Grassland, Qamdo City, Eastern Tibet and the west bank of the Yuqu River. Bangda Grassland in Yiqing Township(益庆乡) of Baxoi County, Qamdo, is near the northern part of Bangda town. The airport is 136 kilometers from the north of Qamdo City, the farthest civil airport in China from the central city. Altitude of more than 4300 meters, it belongs to the plateau airport. Qamdo City, more than 1300 kilometers from Chengdu and Lhasa, is covered with mountains and deep ravines. It takes days and nights on the rough mountain roads from either end to Qamdo. Bangda Airport is the second highest airport in the world with the most difficult flight.

Features

Qamdo Bangda Airport is one of civilian airports with longest runway in the world, with an altitude of more than 4300 meters and a runway of 5 kilometers. With awful weather, the wind speed at the airport is more than 30 meters per second in winter, and the temperature is usually below -20 degrees Celsius in winter and spring. The air density at the airport is only 50 percent of the sea level. It is easy to be delayed in the rainy and snowy weather, and the incoming plane could not stop at Bangda in the afternoon. That is to say, flights arriving at Bangda airport will have to wait for the next day if they can’t fly in the morning.
