How to Get to Zhangmu from Kathmandu
Journey Overview
The total distance from Kathmandu (加德满都) to Zhangmu Border (樟木口岸) is about 120 kilometers. Although the distance is not long, the road conditions are complex, and the trip usually takes 4–7 hours.
This route is characterized by significant altitude changes: starting from the Kathmandu Valley (加德满都谷地), climbing through mountainous terrain, and then descending to the border crossing. Due to rough road sections on the Nepalese side, actual travel time depends on the chosen transportation mode, weather, and waiting time at checkpoints.
Along the way, you will pass through several Nepal Police checkpoints, so keep your passport and travel documents ready for inspection.
Transportation Options
1. Private Car or Shared Vehicle
The most common and convenient way to travel from Kathmandu (加德满都) to Zhangmu Border (樟木口岸).
Where to find cars: You can book in advance in Thamel District (泰米尔区) of Kathmandu or look for vehicles at the border, where drivers often solicit passengers.
Vehicle types: SUVs and 4WD jeeps are common, suitable for the rugged terrain.
Cost reference:
Kathmandu → Zhangmu: around 650 NPR per person (≈ RMB 40).
Zhangmu → Kathmandu: chartered car fees vary greatly, usually RMB 400–1000 per trip depending on the vehicle, group size, and negotiation. Drivers may quote high initially, so bargaining is recommended.
Trip features: Cars often depart at dawn (around 3–4 a.m.) to reach the border around midday. Stops at scenic viewpoints or local restaurants are common.
2. Long-Distance Bus
A budget-friendly but less comfortable option.
Ticket price: about 300 NPR.
Ride experience: buses are often older, with frequent stops for inspections.
Considerations: expect bumpy rides due to poor road conditions. Plan luggage storage in advance if carrying large bags.
3. Self-Drive or Cycling
Not recommended for most travelers due to extremely challenging road conditions.
Road warning: the section between the Friendship Bridge (友谊桥) and Kathmandu is notorious for being rough and dangerous.
Cyclists: only attempt if you have extensive mountain biking experience, a reliable bike, and full safety gear.
Border Crossing Procedures & Key Tips

Nepal Exit – complete exit formalities at the Nepalese border checkpoint.
