About Paba Monastery in Gyirong County, Shigatse

Paba Monastery is located in the east of Gyirong township, 2850 meters above sea level. It was built around 637 AD. When Chizun Princess from Nepal built connection through marriage with Srongtsen Gampo, she carried three Sakyamuni statues with her. Then one of them named Sambu statue was put in Gyirong County and built Paba Monastery for people to worship. Paba Monastery has four floors and the first floor is Buddhist Hall which consists of porch and main hall.   

Paba Monastery belongs to Pavilion style and wood structure building. The was a square tower and center stairs circled to the top. Paba Monastery has four floors and the first floor is Buddhist Hall(佛殿) which consists of porch and main hall. The most famous thing in Paba Monastery is murals. These murals are well preserved and has historical and artistic value.

From architecture and murals, Paba Monastery has been repairs all over the ages. Fortunately, the main building is still preserved old and strong South Asian style. During the “Cultural Revolution”, it has been destroyed and then restoration by Gyirong County government.
