Nagchu-Lhasa Trains

Nagqu and Lhasa are both under the jurisdiction of Tibet Autonomous Region. Located in the north of Tibet-between Tanggula Mountains and Nyainqentanglha Mountains, Nagqu get its name from the Nagqu River(upstream of Nujiang River). Nagqu features in its protected wildlife, unpolluted grassland, bright snow mountains, azure blue lakes and unsophisticated Tibetan life. At the altitude of 3658 meters, Lhasa is the holy land of Tibetan Buddhism, also famed as ‘the Sunshine City’ for its annual sunshine time. Lhasa is not only the capital city of Tibet Autonomous Prefecture, but also the political, economical, cultural and regional center of Tibet. There are well-known attractions in Lhasa, including Namtso Lake, Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple.

About Nagqu Railway Station

As a key component of the sky railway, Nagchu to Lhasa railway was built in June, 2001 and was completed in July, 2006. At an altitude of 4,547 meters above the sea level, Nagchu Railway Station is 322 kilometers away from Lhasa and 820 kilometers away from Golmud. All the Tibet trains would stop over at Nagchu Railway Station. It takes you about four or five hours to get to Lhasa from Nagchu by train. The expense of soft sleeper is 198.5 yuan and the hard sleeper 128.5 yuan.

Nagqu Train Station was constructed in 2006. It is located in Emadige village(俄玛迪格村) of Mendi town, Nagqu County and is close to Qinghai-Tibet Road. Administrated by Qinghai- Tibet Railway Company, it is a second-rate railway station and a transfer and depot station for Qinhai- Tibet Railway. As the station having the highest altitude, it offers opportunity to tourists to enjoy the beautiful scenery during a short period. Qinghai-Tibet Railway is 322 kilometers away from Lhasa Railway Station and 820 kilometers away from Golmud Railway Station.Nagqu Train Station consists of comprehensive station building, warehouse for commodities and other buildings covering an area of 7,412 square kilometers, 2540 square kilometers of which is the area of comprehensive building.Under the governance of Nagqu District of Tibet, Nagqu County serves as the political, cultural, transportation, information and communication center in north Tibet. Located in the central by north part in Tibetan Autonomous Region and between Tanggula Mountains and Nyainqentanglha mountains, it borders on Dangxiong County in the south, Nierong and Anduo County in the north, Biru and Jiali counties in the east and Bange County in the west. It has an average elevation of more than 4,450 meters and the longest distance from east to west of 233 kilometers and the longest distance from south to north of 185 kilometers and a total area of 16,195 square kilometers.

Travel to Lhasa from Nagqu

In this part, how to get to Lhasa from Nagqu by train will be introduced. The transportation between Nagqu and Lhasa by train involves two railway stations, Nagqu Railway Station and Lhasa Railway Station. Taking train there in Tibet is more cost-effective than other vehicles. There are five daily direct trains from Nagqu to Lhasa. The whole journey is about 4-4.5 hours, and the price ranges from 50.5 yuan(hard seat) to 198.5 yuan(soft sleeper). You can choose different classes according to your need, like hard seat, soft seat, soft sleeper or no seat.

Hard berth are divided into upper berth, middle berth and lower hard sleeper (lower berth is the best); while soft berth are divided into upper berth and lower berth (lower berth is better).

Travel to Nagqu from Lhasa

There are four daily direct trains from Lhasa to Nagqu, but one direct train from Lhasa to Nagqu will stop at Dangxiong Railway Station(当雄站) for 4 minutes. In 4 minutes, the train will continue to Nagqu. Dangxiong Railway Station is just a intermediate station between two stations. The whole journey is about 3-4 hours, and the price ranges from 50.5-198.5 yuan. You can choose different classes according to your need, like hard seat, soft seat, soft sleeper or no seat.
