Gawu La Mountain Pass in Tingri County, Shigatse
Gawula Pass (加乌拉山口) is located in Dingri County (定日县), Shigatse City (日喀则市), Tibet Autonomous Region (西藏自治区). Sitting at an elevation of 5,210 meters, it is the core mountain pass on the way to Everest Base Camp (珠穆朗玛峰大本营) and has been recognized as the only viewpoint in the world where five peaks above 8,000 meters can be seen at once.
From east to west, visitors can see the breathtaking lineup of Makalu (玛卡鲁峰, 8,463 m), Lhotse (洛子峰, 8,516 m), Mount Everest (珠穆朗玛峰, 8,848.86 m), Cho Oyu (卓奥友峰, 8,201 m), and Shishapangma (希夏邦玛峰, 8,027 m).
As a major landmark along National Highway G318, Gawula Pass is not only a must-visit stop on the Everest travel route but also a photographer’s paradise, where prayer flags flutter against snow-capped giants. The pass is open year-round with no entrance fee, making it one of Shigatse’s top ten check-in attractions.

Gawula Pass lies within the Mount Everest National Nature Reserve (珠穆朗玛峰国家自然保护区). It serves as a vital link between Shigatse City and Everest Base Camp, about 40 km from the base camp itself. Visitors must traverse the famous 108 hairpin turns of the mountain road before reaching the pass.
