Golmud-Lhasa Trains
Travel between Golmud and Lhasa by train is available for tourists, the distance between them is about 1155 km. Administrated by Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, it is the third largest city in Qinghai and the third largest in the Tibetan Plateau(after Xining and Lhasa). The geographical position of Golmud is very important, bordering Xining in the east, Gansu Dunhuang in the north and Nagqu of Tibet in the south. It is a transit station to Xinjiang, Tibet and other places. Golmud is rich in tourism resources, including the source of the Yangtze River, Great Salt Bridge, Snow Mountain and Glacier, Kunlun Snow View, Sea Sunrise, Desert Forest and other unique natural landscapes. As the first batch of national historical and cultural cities, Lhasa is famous for its beautiful scenery, long history, unique customs, strong religious color, and is favored by tourists from home and abroad. There are well-known attractions in Lhasa, including Namtso Lake, Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple.
Train Schedules Between Golmud and Lhasa
With a distance of 1,142 kilometers, Golmud-Lhasa Railway has been completed on Oct. 12, 2005 and then put into use on Jul.1st, 2006. The transportation between Lhasa and Golmud by train involves two railway stations, Golmud Railway Station and Lhasa Railway Station. Taking train there in Tibet is more cost-effective than other vehicles. There are five daily direct trains from Golmud to Lhasa. And there are also transit trains, mainly transferring in Nagqu and Delingha. The trains pass through one railway station(Nagqu Railway Station) on the way, stopover time is 6-14 minutes. The whole journey is about 14-15 hours, and the price ranges from 141.5 yuan(hard seat) to 564.5 yuan(soft sleeper). You can choose different classes according to your need, like hard seat, soft seat, soft sleeper or standing ticket.

3. Generally, the seats on the train in China have tow types including soft seat and hard seat. Also, there are two kinds of sleeper seats on China’s trains which are hard berth and soft berth. Hard berth are divided into upper berth, middle berth and lower hard sleeper (lower berth is the best); while soft berth are divided into upper berth and lower berth (lower berth is better).
4. In China, taking a train is a comparative cheaper way to cut down the travel cost. While correspondingly, the comfortable level is lower than by air.
5. You need to take the baggages by yourself and keep an eye on them during the journey. Trains in Tibet may be crowded when in the domestic travel seasons as well as summer holidays.
